Description

MWP1 (Motch, Werner & Pakull 1993; PK 080-10.1) is one of the largest and oldest planetary nebula in the Northern sky. Due to this age, it is also known as the Methuselah Nebula. There's a second, even fainter PN in this field called Alv1 (PK G79.8-10.2). It was discovered in 2009 by Portugese amateur astronomer Filipe Alves while imaging MWP 1. The discovery paper also includes the famous Squid Nebula Ou4.

The large OIII shell is likely associated with the central PN but I could not find any good sources to confirm this. The background H-alpha signal is part of a very large cloud complex and does not appear to be listed in any of the common catalogs. The closest Sharpless object near this field is Sh2-110.

The Ha signals and OIII shells around these PN are very faint, the raw stacks are listed as revisions for comparison. Strong noise reduction and smoothing was used to present these signals in a clear way.

I discovered this region on the left edge of my 2021 Cygnus mosaic, and it has been on my 'revisit with better equipment list' ever since. This time I used both a longer focal length and much more exposure time.
